The Importance of Grooms

I think that having grooms are nice, especially at the shows and during the school year! A lot of people think that they should just tack up their horses on their own and take care of them themselves, and I don’t think thats wrong. But competition horses need to be taken care of properly.

If you polo wrap them a certain way they can get sore, if you don’t put the right riding pad on they could get a sore back etc. But riders with grooms should still know how to tack up a horse!

I grew up tacking up my horse and setting up (and taking down) the jumps! So when I see a girl who doesn’t know how to hoof pick her own horse, its disappointing. But the great part about this sport is how much there is to learn.

If you have a groom, and they tack and untack your horse for you, and turnout your horse for you, maybe one day you can tack or untack your horse and turn them out. It only helps you bond with a horse.

Whenever I’m on a new horse, I try to spend as much time with it as I can so I can create a bond. At horse shows, It’s very nice to have the grooms so we don’t get out clothes dirty and the horses always look spotless! I think that riders and barns with grooms is a great thing, but everyone should know how to take care of their horse anyways.
