The horses and ponies who devote about every second when they aren’t eating to us deserve nice refreshing gifts every once and awhile… these gifts most often in the form of treats. Something fun to do this summer while the ponies get a rest from the heat is to create some homemade horse treats using these All Thing Equine approved recipes. Full disclosure, all recipes were found on other sites, just modified and All Things Equine hacked and tried.

First, most horse treat recipes require hard oats, because it gives the treats flavor and the horses something to chew on, but today I modified the recipe in hopes of getting a smoother texture in my treats. Instead of using oats i used oat flour, used the same measurements in the recipe i am about to provide and had soft, smooth treats. As I expand my research into making treats, I’ll add more and more to these types of posts!

The Recipe: Known as the Banana, Peanut Butter Bread/ Treat, is perfect for a horse who loves something salty and has a taste for bananas. This treat is customizable and any fruit that a horse can eat, is able to be incorporated into the treat. The texture and scent of the treat is very similar to banana bread too.

  • 2 and a half cups of unsweetened apple sauce

  • 1 and a half cups of oat flowers or ground bran

  • Half a cup of all purpose flour

  • 1 - 3 pureed bananas

  • ½ a tablespoon of peanut butter

Mix these ingredients together then pour them into a small cake pan used to make banana bread. The consistency should be paste like and smell of bananas and peanut butter. Make sure when filling the cake tin, you leave room for the treats to rise, and always spray the pan!

Feeling in the mood to add a little something extra to the treats, perhaps a glaze or sort of frosting? Heres another recipe for some decor.

  • ¼ a cup of molasses

  • Diced up carrots (No exact measurement)

  • Diced up apple

Or…

  • A Generous amount of oats

  • A Small amount of Molasses

This can go on top and add a crunchy element, just make sure that when adding the molasses you keep in mind how much sugar intake is appropriate for your horse depending on their lifestyle. And, add this mixture once the treat is halfway through baked, so the oats can bake with them. The best way to bake this treat considering its density is to really just eye ball it and test it every 10 - 20 minutes.

Hope your ponies enjoy this treat, which give their mouths a break from chewing and provide a delicious sweet.
