Summer has arrived, meaning the hot months have also rolled in. With temperatures rising it is very important to keep yourself and your horse cool, which starts with the correct apparel. All Things Equine already released five ways to beat the heat, here's another post to go along with that focused on wearing the correct riding equipment.

Tip number one - Ok, yes, polo shirts and short sleeved tops are always easier to wear as the sun beat down, but protecting your arms, chest, and nick is very important for your long term health, which is why i suggest wearing long sleeved, breathable, schooling shirts. Schooling shirts with mesh under the arms is very easy to stay cool in and keeps the sun off of you. Personally, I wear E.I.S shirts, Sport Horse Lifestyle, and Tredstep.
Tip number two - know your colors. The darker the color the more heat will be drawn to you and your horse, so during summer make sure to stick to light colors and pastels. This includes breeches and saddle pads! Although not everyone has tan breeches to go around, and believe me i don't, sometimes light colors are the best options. My barn is a firm believer in all white saddle pads and half pads, because it doesn't draw
sun towards the horse.

Tip number three - Ride with your hair up. The pain of putting your hair in a hair net is all too real, but keeping the excess hair off of your back while riding will also eliminate unneeded heat and sweat. If you can't ride with your hair up, i suggest two braids, so the hair leaves room for your neck to breath.
Tip number four - Keep your socks light and gloves off. The hands and feet play a big role in controlling the body's temperature, so when it is very warm, keeping on light socks will help regulate your body temperature. If you can, riding without gloves or in very light gloves will also help.

Tip number five - Do not ride with glasses or sunglasses on, and limit facial products! Riding with sunglasses or glasses on (Unless needed), can first be a large safety risk, but also increase the risk of sweating and bothersome conditions on ones face. I suggest keeping your face bare other than a reasonable amount of sunscreen… yes, i mean limit the makeup if you are choosing to wear any. Caking on makeup, especially foundation and cover up in the heat, will make breakouts occur easier and increase sweating.
Hope these five, easy tips will help you stay cool this summer while things heat up! Remember, Long sleeve shirts and sunblock will be your best friend during these months, even if they are a hassle.
